The world’s largest gypsum dune field is the defining feature of White Sands National Park. Located in New Mexico and surrounded by the White Sands Missile Range, the park provides expansive views of the white sands, stretching out for miles to the horizon. And the shifting dunes are constantly changing the park’s features. But there is more to do in the park than just see the dunes. There is “sand sledding”, an activity unique to the park. There are also hiking paths and opportunities for tubing and camping in the park.

Established in 2019, the park provides few amenities, so be sure to pack food and water. Also, the temperatures in the park can be extreme in the summer. The hot sun reflecting off the white sands can be blinding and dangerous for the unprepared. Crowds are generally not an issue, and visiting October through April will help you avoid some of the more dangerous heat.
