Death Valley. The name itself invokes images of a scorching and parched land, devoid of life and unsuitable for people or animals. And, although much of its reputation is earned, the park is also full of surprises for those willing to look. Home to some of the hottest temperatures on Earth and the lowest point in North America, the park can be foreboding. But pick the right time of year and the right time of day and you can learn about some of the amazing diversity of the park.

Established as a national park in 1994 and located in California’s Mohave Desert, the park is home to enormous salt flats and rugged mountains. Here you can find old mining camps and other signs of the area’s past inhabitants. And the park isn’t devoid of animals. Here’ you’ll find bighorn sheep, coyotes, jackrabbits and even desert tortoises, all perfectly adapted to their environment. And if you arrive early or stay late, you’ll be treated to amazing desert sunrises and sunsets. With the right planning, Death Valley can provide a unique and enjoyable experience like no other in the park system.
