Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Cutting through the heart of the park is the Gunnison River, a testament to the powerful forces of erosion over millions of years. Since before the dawn of man, the river has been cutting the deep canyon you can see today. Steep and narrow, the canyon provides some awe-inspiring views as it reaches over 2,700 feet (829m) deep at its lowest point.

Established in 1999, the park is one of the least visited. Here you can find peace and quiet away from the crowds you may find elsewhere. And at 48 miles long, you should be able to find a trail that fits your level without running into too many other visitors. You can take in the park in a day or spend a few days wandering around its natural wonders. And look out for some of the park’s wildlife including elk, deer and eagles.
