Top 3 "Must See"
Have limited time, or just looking for some guidance on the best way to spend your time in the park? Here are our Top 3 “Must See” attraction in the park.
South Rim Road is a great way to see some of the park’s most stunning vistas. There are twelve overlooks where you can stop and take in some of the views and get some great pictures.
The road is seven miles one way, so you’ll have to turn around at some point to get back. Highlights include the Chasm View and Painted Wall View, but in reality, it’s not too difficult to stop and see them all. Most are located near the parking area. Others are a short walk.
Because the road isn’t too long, you can take in the views and experience it in a half a day.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison is an International Dark Sky Park. According to the International Dark Sky Association, this means that the park “possess[es] an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment.”
You can see the stars from anywhere in the park. For a great view of the sunset beforehand, go to the Sunset View Trail on the south rim. Here you’ll find a westward facing view of the sky at sunset. Be sure to check the weather conditions, of course, before planning to stargaze.
The Gunnison Route Trail will take you deep into the canyon. It’s only for those who are physically able, as you’ll descend (and then have to climb) about 1,800 feet. Be prepared for frequent stops and make sure you bring enough water. You’ll need to scramble on the bottom to get to the end of the trail.
The trail is less than a mile each way, but give yourself plenty of time. Also, you’ll need a wilderness permit to go on the trail. The number is limited, so you’ll need to show up an hour and a half before the visitor center closes on the day before your hike.
You’ll get a short safety presentation before getting the permit. There is no cost for the permit.
