Top 3 "Must See"

Have limited time, or just looking for some guidance on the best way to spend your time in the park? Here are our Top 3 “Must See” attraction in the park.

The Alkali Flats trail is a 4.8 mile loop trail that is probably unlike any other you’ll experience. You’ll hike over the white gypsum sands that give the park its name. You’ll feel surrounded and engulfed as the wind frequently covers up any footprints that may have been made. However, you’ll need to make sure you’re prepared. There is no shade on the trail, so you may be facing difficult conditions if you go during the middle of the day. Also, make sure you have plenty of water. You’ll also be going up and down dunes, so the hike can be strenuous.

A drive along the Dunes Drive is suitable for all ages and ability levels. The entire drive is 16 miles, which will take you about an hour if you don’t stop. You’ll get a great view of the park without having to get out of the car, although it is worth it to get out occasionally and see some of the scenery or snap some pictures. The first five miles are paved, while the rest is hard-packed gypsum. Understand that the road can be rough, and you’ll want to be careful to stay in sight of your car, as people have been know to get lost in the sand dunes.

Yes, you can sled on the dunes just as you would on snow! There is no dedicated area, but you can pick up a cheap disc at a store or online. Climb a dune that looks good, jump on and sled down. It’s a unique experience and probably the only chance you’ll ever have to do it. The park doesn’t have equipment, but you can generally find one for under $30 elsewhere if you don’t already have one at home.
