Wind Cave is one of the longest caves in the world. The name comes from the sound emanating from the cave’s natural entrance when it was first discovered. The cave has over 150 miles of explored caves with stalactites, stalagmites and boxwork formations. You’ll find several tours available, varying by length and ability. Above the surface, you’ll find grass prairies with bison, elk and prairie dogs. The park also has several hiking trails to explore.

Established in 1903, the park is located in southwest South Dakota. The park does not get overly crowded and you can experience it all in a day with the proper planning. Temperatures outside can be extreme in the summer or winter, but in the cave you’ll find temperatures hovering around 53 degrees Fahrenheit year round. The park is also a short drive from Badlands National Park, so you can easily hit both on the same trip.
