The one-hour Garden of Eden Tour is the least-strenuous of the cave tours and is easily accessible for all ages. At only about 1/3 of a mile, the tours gives you a good sampling of some of the cave formations you’ll see in the park, including boxwork, flowstone and cave popcorn. The tour is accessible by elevator and costs $10 for adults. Children 6-16 will cost $5. Get there early, as tickets are sold on a first-come first-serve basis at the visitor center and cannot be purchased online or in advance.
There is only one natural entrance to the cave and this walking tour will take you down into it from there. Follow the approximately 300 steps down through the 2/3 of a mile trail. On the tour you’ll see plenty of the boxwork formations that line the cave. The trip should only take about an hour and, luckily, you’ll take an elevator back up at the end. The tour costs $12 for adults. Children 6-16 will cost $6. Get there early, as tickets are sold on a first-come first-serve basis at the visitor center and cannot be purchased online or in advance.
The Rankin Ridge Interpretive Trail is a one mile trail that will take you to the park’s highest point. You’ll get amazing views of the rolling Black Hills and surrounding forests. There is about a 240 foot elevation gain, so it may be a bit too strenuous for some. But between hiking and stopping for some great pictures, the entire trail shouldn’t take more than about a half hour and, of course, it’s free to enter the park and hike.
