Map
Located about 70 miles from Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park conjures up images of both amazing natural wonders and swashbuckling pirates seeking buried treasures. Consisting of seven islands, the waters surrounding the park are home to striking coral reefs and ancient shipwrecks. Snorkeling is popular and you can see both of these features, along with the amazing ocean wildlife, at the same time.
Established as a national park in 1992, you’ll need to hire a boat or seaplane to reach the park. Because of its remoteness, the park is one of the least visited national parks. If you go, be sure to visit the enormous Fort Jefferson on Garden Key. The now abandoned fort was never completed or fully armed, but has an interesting history and is impressive nonetheless. It’s also one of the few parks that is actually better to visit in the winter due to less rainfall and cooler temperatures.
