Haleakala National Park

Haleakala means “House of the Sun”, and it’s a fitting name for this Hawaiian volcano. Arriving early for the sunrise is the highlight of your trip to the park. Mark Twain himself called it “the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed.” As the sun rises over the dormant volcano, it reveals a landscape shaped by nature over millions of years.  But you’ll have to plan far in advance. Reservations are required and the trip can take up to two hours. And be ready for the surprisingly cold air as you go up in elevation.

Established in 1961, the park also offers plenty of hiking and backpacking trails and opportunities to bike down the mountain. Get up early if  you want to include the sunrise in your package. The park is also a great spot for stargazing. Go up to the summit to see one of the most amazing and vibrant night skies in the islands. The lower elevations are also great for wildlife and camping.
