The namesake of America’s newest national park, New River is the highlight and sculptor of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The irony of the name, however, lies in the fact that some geologists have determined that the New River is perhaps the second oldest river in the world, behind only the Nile. Some estimates put its age at 360 million years. Over that time, the river has carved a deep valley perfect for amazing scenery and incredible recreation, including hiking and boating.
Winding through West Virginia, the park is home to the historic 3,000 foot New River Gorge Bridge, once the longest steel arch bridge in the world. The river itself has long been considered a premier destination for white water rafting, with rapids for all skill levels. The park has preserved much of the history of the area, and you’ll find beavers, otters, mink and deer among other wildlife. The best time to visit the park is the summer, when you can experience all the recreational opportunities. Because it is now a national park, it is primed to become a candidate for overcrowding due to the various population centers within a day’s drive, so try to plan on a weekday visit if possible.
