There are few places in the world where you can see the awesome force of active volcanoes, and the largest in the world is Hawaii’s Mauna Loa. Together with Mount Kilauea, these two can both be found in Hawai’I Volcanoes National Park. The volcanoes tower over Hawaii’s Big Island and present an other-worldly landscape. Whereas Haleakala is inactive, these behemoths continue to spew forth steam, ash and lava as they continue to re-shape the landscape of the island. The area is also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Established in 1916, you can reach the calderas of both volcanoes, although though you’ll need to do some walking for Mauna Loa. Plan in advance as the altitude of the volcanoes makes the weather chilly and unpredictable. You’ll also want to arrive early to avoid the crowds. Your visit may also be enhanced by learning about the natural forces at play and the history of the volcanoes. At the park, you can find information at the gift shop or from a park ranger.
