Getting There
Getting to Acadia National Park
Getting to the park is relatively easy. With two airports within driving distance, you can generally get to the park from anywhere. And while you’re there you can explore it by car or even with a free shuttle that runs in the area.
By Air
Bangor International Airport (BGR)
Bangor Airport is about an hour north of the park and is serviced by American, United, Delta and Allegiant Airlines. Currently there are no regularly scheduled international flights directly into Bangor.
Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
Logan Airport is about five hours south of the park and is serviced by nearly every domestic and international airline.
By Car
The only route to Mount Desert Island is Maine Route 3 (ME 3).
From Boston, you can take I-95 North to ME 3. It’s about a five hour drive. (274 mi./440km)
From Bangor, you can take US Route 1A, which will become ME 3. It’s about an hour drive. (46 mi./74km).
If you need to rent a car, here are some helpful links.
By Bus
The Bar Harbor Shuttle runs between Bangor and Bar Harbor. Reservations are limited, so you’ll want to plan far in advance. Here is a link to their service.
Getting Around
Driving in Acadia can be dangerous to both you and other park visitors. Please use caution, especially when rounding corners. And while there’s nothing like the freedom of stopping when and where you like and taking the park at your own pace, there’s an alternative for those who want someone else to do the driving. The Island Explorer Shuttle will take you all over, FOR FREE. According to their website:
The Island Explorer features bus routes linking hotels, inns, and campgrounds with destinations in Acadia National Park and neighboring village centers. Clean propane-powered vehicles offer Mount Desert Island visitors and residents free transportation to hiking trails, carriage roads, island beaches, and in-town shops and restaurants.
