Map
Sometimes referred to as a “mini Yellowstone”, California’s Lassen Volcanic National Park has many of the same features without the overwhelming crowds. Mount Lassen, the park’s namesake, is an active volcano. Throughout the park you’ll see evidence of subterranean activity. Hydrothermal features including billowing steam and bubbling mud pots dots the park. And don’t miss the Bumpass Hell Trail, a 3 mile loop that leads into a large hydrothermal basin. The park has a handful of trails and the main recreation in the park is hiking and backpacking. The park is home to black bears, foxes and mountain lions, among others.
Established as a national park in 1916, it’s about a three hour drive from Sacramento. It’s one of the lesser visited national parks and rarely gets overcrowded. Go in the summer for the best weather as highs can top out in the 30s or 40s in the winter. There is limited camping in the park, so you’re best advised to plan in advance. You’ll also want to check the park’s status as it has been closed before due to wildfires.
