Top 3 "Must See"

Have limited time, or just looking for some guidance on the best way to spend your time in the park? Here are our Top 3 “Must See” attraction in the park.

On the south slope of Mount Rainier, at about 5,400 feet is the Paradise area of the park. Wildflower meadows lead to snow-capped peak of the mountain in the most scenic area of the park. The Henry Jackson Visitor Center is a great jumping-off point for the area. A number of trails of all lengths and difficulties lie near the area. Here you’ll see stunning views of the mountain and there’s perhaps no better place in the park to capture some amazing photos. You can also stop by and visit the historic Paradise Inn, built in 1917. The area can get crowded during summer months and holidays, so be prepared.

The Skyline Loop Trail is one of the most popular trails in the park for a reason. The 6.2 mile loop ascends more than 1700 feet. On the way you’ll see a waterfall and, on clear days, multiple peaks and some of the more beautiful parts of the park. The hike can be challenging and you’ll want to find a clear day to take full advantage of the scenery. Because of the unpredictable weather, the trail is best during the high summer months, unless you intend to hike in the snow and ice. It is easily accessible from the Paradise area of the park.

To learn more about the history of the area, stop in to the Longmire Museum. Here you’ll find helpful park rangers, information, a gift shop and picnic tables. You can also take a self-guided walk through the Longmire Historic District. Here you’ll also find historic buildings from the early 20th century, including the impressive Longmire Administration Building. Touring the area on foot should take no more than an hour but is an important part of understanding the area.
