Top 3 "Must See"

Have limited time, or just looking for some guidance on the best way to spend your time in the park? Here are our Top 3 “Must See” attraction in the park.

Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in the park, with more than 150 rooms and 23 kivas (circular rooms used for religious rites and political meetings). An estimated 100 people may have lived in the area at one time. You can only visit the area on a ranger-guided tour, so you’ll need to plan and buy tickets in advance. Tickets are $8 per person and can be purchased up to two weeks in advance. The tour also involves ladder-climbing, so be sure to ask about that if you’re not physically able. None of the ranger-led cliff dwelling tours are handicap accessible.

The Petroglyph Point Trail is a 2.4 mile loop trail that will take you through the remnants of cliff dwellings and petroglyphs, which are rock carvings. The trail is rated as moderate and most of it is in the shade. It will also give you some great views of the surrounding area. It’s best experienced in the summer.

If you’re not able to do the trails or tour the cliff dwellings, you can still experience the park by driving on North Rim Road. The 12 mile road passes through a tunnel and three overlooks where you can get a birds-eye view of the park. The park is also close to the Four Corners National Monument, so you’ll get a view of four states from the road. Be sure to stop at Park Point, which is the highest spot in the park where you can get 360 degree views.
