Top 3 "Must See"
Have limited time, or just looking for some guidance on the best way to spend your time in the park? Here are our Top 3 “Must See” attraction in the park.
The largest active sand dunes in the Arctic, the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes are one of the most unique features of Kobuk Valley National Park. Over 30 miles of sand dunes are a relic from the last ice age when retreating glaciers ground down the rock into the sand you see today. The dunes can reach a height of one hundred feet. In the woods and tundra around the dunes you’ll see bears, wolves, moose, caribou and other animals. The dunes are a great place for hiking or camping on the level surface. To get there, you can take an air taxi that can land right on the dunes. You can also raft into the area or hire someone for a guided tour. There are no roads leading to the dunes. They are best experienced in summer but be prepared for unseasonal heat and mosquitos.
There are no roads or marked trails in the park, so you’re free to experience the untouched arctic wilderness on your own. There are also no campgrounds, so you’ll need to bring your own equipment for back country camping. Keep in mind that the terrain can be difficult, the weather can be unpredictable, and you may encounter bears, caribou or other wildlife, so take precautions with yourself and your provisions. Make sure you’re prepared and are an experienced camper. The most popular place to camp in the park is at Great Kobuk Sand Dunes. There you may encounter other campers in one of the most unique parts of the park.
One things on many peoples bucket list is witnessing the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis). As the park is above the Arctic Circle, it’s an ideal spot to witness the amazing natural phenomenon. You’ll need a clear night and the right conditions. Also keep in mind that the sun does not set in the summer in park, so you’ll need to go before or after the season. Visiting in the winter, you’ll likely confront inclement weather and sub-zero temperatures. Check the park’s website for current conditions.
