Have limited time, or just looking for some guidance on the best way to spend your time in the park? Here are our Top 3 “Must See” attraction in the park.

At over 46,000 cubic feet, the General Grant Tree is the second largest tree in the world, behind only the General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park. The tree is easily accessible. It’s located in Grant Grove, a 1/3 mile paved loop. Dubbed “the nation’s Christmas Tree”, the tree was declared a national shrine in 1956. The tree is believed to be about 3,000 years old. In the grove you’ll also see other examples of large, old-growth sequoias.

A visit to the Zumwalt Meadow will give you amazing views of the canyon in the most picturesque part of the park. Granite cliffs, green meadows and a river await in the easily-accessible valley floor. An easy 1 ½ mile trail encircles the area. For a longer and more rewarding walk, follow on to Roaring River Falls. Along the way you’ll see more of the park’s wildlife. The entire trip is just over 5 miles out and back. Roaring river falls is a narrow cascade that empties into a pool below. The areas are best experienced in the summer. You’ll want to leave early or try to visit during the week to avoid crowds.

Boyden Cavern is not operated by the National Park Service, but by a private company. But it’s a unique opportunity to see some of the underground geology of the area. A short hike will take you into the cavern where you’ll see stalagmites, stalactites and other features formed slowly over thousands of years. The walking tour should be booked in advance and is $19.00 per adult for about a 45 to 60 minute tour.
