The Hidden Valley Trail is a short loop trail that is about a mile long. Along the way you’ll see boulders and rock formations, as well as a variety of cacti and trees. It’s one of the more popular trails in the park, so go early or later or during the off season to avoid crowds. Park at the Hidden Valley Trailhead to start. For a longer and more challenging hike, try the Ryan Mountain Trail. The three mile trail will take you through stunning rock formations, cacti, wildflowers, and the park’s signature Joshua Trees. The trail is out-and-back (1.5 miles each way). Keep in mind that neither trail has much shade, so be sure to go at an appropriate time and bring plenty of water.

Cholla Cacti are short, shrubby, cylindrical plants with sharp spikes. A collection of them is called a cholla garden and the Cholla Cactus Trail will take you to get an up close look. It’s a short .2 mile walk that’s easy for all levels. There is no shade on the trail, so if heat is an issue, make sure to go early or late in the day or during the offseason. You’ll also want to make sure you stay on the trail as getting poked by the sharp needles of the cholla cactus can be painful.

You can take in panoramic views of the valley below from the popular Keys View. From hear you can see the now-abandoned Salton Sea, Santa Rosa Mountains, Coachella Valley and San Andreas Fault. It’s a short .2 mile hike that’s accessible for people. It’s the best view in the park and a popular spot for sightseeing and photos.
