Top 3 "Must See"

Have limited time, or just looking for some guidance on the best way to spend your time in the park? Here are our Top 3 “Must See” attraction in the park.

The Lehman Caves are one of the most popular and beautiful features of the park. Three different ranger-led tours are available every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. The tours are anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes long. Each tour is about a half mile and will cost anywhere from $12 to $15 for adults and $6 to $8 for children. You’ll see attractions such as the Gothic Palace, Music Room and the Lodge Room. The caves are well-lit and signs will give you more information about the geology of the area. You’ll want to be sure to reserve in advance as the size of groups is limited and tours are often sold out.

Wheeler Peak is the highest point in New Mexico and the top hiking destination in the park. At about 13,100 feet, the peak is accessible to most hikers willing to put in the effort, although it is covered with snow for most of the year. To reach the summit, you can take the Williams Lake Trail. The first couple of miles are relatively easy through the woods. After that, you’ll be above the tree line and the hike will involve a great deal of incline and switchbacks. In total, you’ll be climbing about 3,000 feet. Be prepared for a change in the weather conditions from the bottom of the trail to the top. It’s about 8.5 miles out and back. The trail can also be busy during the peak season, so leave early to give yourself enough time and space.

For an easier experience, try the Alpine Lakes Trail. At less than 3 miles total, you’ll find two lakes and pass through spruce and pine forest and eventually to the alpine environment above. The trail gains about 400 feet in elevation throughout. You’ll also get a great view of Wheeler Peak and the opportunity for some of the best scenery in the park. The trail is good for all age levels but can become crowded. Try to go early or during the offseason.
